Business Process Management (BPM)

Extending BPM to the Desktop and Human Operator

Most of today’s enterprise BPM solutions provide a snapshot into how the enterprise works from a high-level view of their IT infrastructure down to the individual processes through various systems. Unfortunately, these BPM solutions are server-based and are often focused primarily on enterprise systems. Although helpful, they do not take into account the myriad of applications at the desktop and the human operator--the one process not yet automated, the ultimate exception handlers. In general BPM solutions cannot monitor, manage, and control how the human operator works and uses these applications outside of the BPM-defined system.

Cicero extends BPM to the desktop and the human operator by integrating any application that is used to perform activities and tasks. Cicero provides an automated integration framework for business users, which incorporates manual tasks such as note-taking and other workflow tasks that currently might be excluded by BPM solutions. Cicero enables the integration of these human workflows by treating the BPM system as just another application at the end users’ desktop. Although Cicero can produce and consume web services to accomplish this, it is not necessary because the Cicero Platform simply “plugs in” the BPM application with other desktop applications such as Java, ERP, Windows, Citrix, mainframe and character-based, MS Office, and Lotus Notes, and others.

Using Cicero, organizations can

  • Rapidly extend, integrate, and automate their BPM solution to the desktop and human operators without writing code or having access to the backend servers
  • Define, manage, and control workflow tasks
  • Monitor and report desktop application events to provide alerts, notifications, and other triggers in order to enforce business rules for compliance, cross and up sell opportunities
  • Eliminate inefficiencies such as copy and pasting, navigation through several screens and applications, and human operator activities such as manual note-taking
  • Collect, track, and report any human operator activity in order to identify new areas for improvement within and outside of the existing BPM system
